Maharashtra is home to around 150 sugar factories, and when combined with those in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, these factories employ over 14 lakh sugarcane workers. Of these, at least 8 lakh workers are from Beed district, with many others coming from neighboring talukas in districts such as Jalna, Latur, and Parbhani. This vast workforce plays a vital role in the sugar industry across the region.
Families engaged in sugarcane cutting live around factory premises for six months in dire conditions. Each group, or “TOLI,” consists of 10–12 pairs of workers (20–24 people), half of whom are women. These families reside in temporary shacks on open grounds near sugarcane fields. They lack access to nutritious food and education, leading to severe health and developmental challenges.
As both parents live near the factory or in the sugarcane farm, school-going children also stay with them for about six months. This situation leads to the children missing out on education, and they, in turn, grow up to become future sugarcane workers. If these children do not attend school, this cycle will continue indefinitely.

Through this initiative, thousands of children will receive basic education, which will empower them to secure better jobs and improve their futures. This will also lead to a reduction in addiction rates within their communities, decrease the incidence of child marriages, and help control child abuse and early pregnancies. Furthermore, women will gain access to better sanitation, and these efforts will ultimately uplift sugarcane workers, helping them live better lives.
Your contribution can transform the lives of these families. By supporting CDF, you are investing in food security, education, and a brighter future for the children of sugarcane workers.
